TriState Llama Caregivers - Fiber Evaluation Clinic

Creekside Llama Farm, with Jeff and Jane Sauer as our host, was the place to be on Saturday July 12, 2003.

31 "Fiber Enthusiasts" gathered in the "Conference Room" of Creekside Llama Farm,  to learn about fiber and the products that can be made from it.  TLC members provided a delicious lunch with all proceeds going to assist in llama rescue efforts. Our speaker Rhonda Lamb, LA Fibres, Saskatchewan, Canada shared about her experiences in starting a fiber co-op in Canada. The morning topics consisted of uses of fiber, blending and evaluating. Each group evaluated a fleece and told what they could make from it. A lot was learned about what can affect  the fleece of your llama.

Annette Ericksen provided a very informative display with a black light to check the color of the fiber. Many different types of fiber samples were available to compare the qualities of each. We learned you do not have to have the (silky fine - no guard hair) fleece to make products from your llama fiber.  Fiber evaluation kits were available to help you compare your fiber to various grades of fiber in the samples.

Rhonda - what products can we produce from our fiber?

A visit to the Boys to evaluate the fleece with hands-on.
